After You
UK Indies exclusive LP is on 'half red / half blue' coloured vinyl.
The long awaited third full length album from the awesome singer-songwriter Jack Peñate. Marking his first set of new music since 2009's Everything Is New!
The album doesn’t just draw on his musical journey of the past ten years, it brings in influences from the music he heard as a child. Loaded Gun has a prechorus that Lennon and McCartney would have liked to have written. As a child his brother would play him Jungle music. There’s elements of that too. His dad ran acid house raves – that’s in there. But perhaps, the most poignant track is Gemini. With nothing more than piano, vibraphone and drum beat, the words of Peñate’s grandfather, the writer and artist Mervyn Peake, are read by his uncle Fabian. And it’s not the only family tie. The artwork for the album, and the first video, has been done by Peñate’s cousin, the acclaimed artist, Eddie Peake. “We both grew up with an uncanny focus on what we wanted to do, but had never worked together,” says Jack. His work is both incredibly joyous and melancholy, and it does something to me that music does to me too.”

Everything Is Recorded
Temporary
Temporary features an incredible roll call of collaborators including Sampha, Bill Callahan, Noah Cyrus, Florence Welch, Maddy Prior, Berwyn, Alabaster Deplume, Jah Wobble, Yazz Ahmed, Laura Groves, Kamasi Washington, Rickey Washington, Roses Gabor, Jack Penate, Samantha Morton, Clari Freeman-Taylor and Nourished By Time. Created over four years from 2020 to 2024, Temporary was recorded at Russell’s own west London Copper House studio, alongside sessions in Tottenham, Cumbria, Dorset, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and is set to build on previous acclaimed releases including 2018’s eponymous, Mercury Prize-nominated debut album. On Temporary, Russell reboots his musical DNA: while his music had previously been about rhythm, words and melody in that order, on Temporary he swaps rhythm and melody, the rhythm taking up less space and the melody coming to the fore. Musically some songs are inspired by the sonic thought experiment “what if folk music had ‘gone digital’ in the 80s, just as reggae had?”, while spiritually and lyrically the themes encompass grief and loss. The results – elevated by an intriguing and diverse set of collaborators who sound like the best and freshest versions of themselves – are the most luminous and relaxed compositions of Russell’s career. Every song sounds washed in sunshine and graced by tenderness. More fragile and quieter than previous Everything Is Recorded output, it might be one of the gentlest records ever made about death. In Russell’s own words “making the album was joyous, a way of hallowing life.”

Advent Calendar 24 - 2010
NEW SLANG COMPETITION WINNERS So we asked you to tell us your favourite New Slang stories and why it means a lot to you and here are our winning THREE! In 1st Place winning a SEASON TICKET TO NEW SLANG - JOE BORGES I came to kingston at tiffins in year 7 when banquet was just getting bigger, you started new slang just before i turned 17, the day I redeemed my first loyalty card was magical, and I've had SO MANY incredible nights at new slang, I never thought I'd admit it but I kind of preferred it at McClusky's (especially on my 20th birthday after Jack Penate when I got a complimentary round of champagne to sip on the dancefloor, LIKE A G, and pestered Jon tolley to play If I Could by hundred reasons to no avail). ANYWAY, my story could be that night, or could be when Foals played and I happened to have the same haircut as Yannis at the time, and didn't realise why girls wanted to have their photo taken with me until the third time it happened, or it could be the incredible night when Architecture in Helsinki played and I crowdsurfed, it could be when Frank Turner played and a man ran THROUGH the glass bus stop waiting for the 57 home and my gf got glass in her arse and had to go to Kingston A&E, or it could be on New Slang's 1st birthday when I won a Hot Club de Paris album in the pass the parcel and finally kissed the girl I really fancied.... But I reckon the best one has to be seeing Art Brut play on the very last day of 6th form with my best mates, getting the set list signed by the band afterwards, and spending the bus ride home singing Emily Kane, especially 'I want school kids on buses singing her name!!' on the very last night that the lyric could be true. It could only happen at New Slang. Don't care if I win, writing it down makes me realise how much I love the place! With love, Joe Borges (age 21 years 8 months) x In 2nd place - winning every album from a 2010 New Slang headliner! - JOHN HALL Dear New Slang, My story is one that tugs at the heartstrings. It was September last year during freshers week, when Example decided to play at New Slang, that I experienced my first New Slang. Enjoying myself like everyone else there, I met a girl. I won't say names so I don't embarass her, but we had a few drinks and got on really well, both enjoying our newly acquired titles of "freshers". We decided to meet at the next New Slang and every week after that, almost like a Thursday night date session every week. Things grew from friendship to relationship before Christmas of 2009. Well I'm pleased to say we've been going out for over a year now. Sharing memories like Hadouken's moshpit, Pete's hatred of Zebras, Darwin's love for them, having drinks with Frank Turner, and who can forget Jack Pinata! She has, as well as you awesome guys and girls at New Slang, have made my university experience so much better than I thought it would be. So thanks so much for making Kingston my favourite place EVER! NS will always have a special place in my head because of it! Lots of Christmas Love JOHN HALL In 3rd place winning - 4 tickets for New Slang New Years SHANA JOSEPH Let me tell you a story of the best night of my year... It all began one chilly October night. After hours of pretending to study and drinking copious amounts of tea, I had decided to retire for the night. Sleep never comes easily to me and so, three hours later at three am I was still awake. As I was warm and fairly comfortable, I began to browse the internet with my Blackberry rather than get out of bed to use my laptop. I read the latest tweets in my timeline, checked my emails and then decided to check what up-coming shows Banquet had to offer. Upon reading "Tokyo Police Club at New Slang on November 11th", I proceeded to scream with excitement. Thankfully, my housemates did not wake. One of my favourite bands was to play at New Slang and I was most definitely going to be there. Ironically, eleven is my favourite number and November my favourite month. For some reason I don't understand, I always look forward to the 11/11 of every year, and this year it proved to be my favourite day of the entire year. Anticipation for that night seemed to increase as days went passed. How that was possible, I haven't a clue. When the in-store gig was announced, I got my ticket to that as well. A double dose of TPC in one day was more than I had ever dreamed of. Every time someone mentioned November, I grinned so broadly it hurt. It was so cold on the day of the in-store that we were allowed to wait inside until they began to set up the band's equippment. I walked inside and right in from of me was Dave Monks. I don't think I registered the magnitude of the moment until a few minutes later, when the queue had formed outside and I watched Dave, Josh and Graham walk down to the off licence near the Hippodrome. It seemed the most surreal thing to me; Tokyo Police Club, all the way from Canada and one of my favourite bands, were walking down to the shop while fans were lining up waiting to see them. It was freezing outside but I couldn't feel it because I was buzzing with an excitement I hadn't felt in a long while. During the in-store I was right up front, in front of them and I tried to control my smiling throughout their set. I don't think I was very convincing because at New Slang later that night, when Dave saw me he said 'Hey! I remember you'. I got some good pictures of them in store, I watched with fascination as Josh played the guitar more skillfully than I've ever seen anyone else do so and Graham bounced skillfully between three instruments. Dave sounded great live and Greg looked so relaxed and content as he drummed looking on to the crowd. Thinking back on it all now, I still feel overwhelmed. Talking to them after the instore and getting a poster signed was awesome. I congratulated them on being invited to perform on Letterman and even got a quote of Dave for an article I was writing about Banquet. New Slang was on a whole other level. I was right up front, of course! I expected a five song set and nothing more but they surpassed all expectations. The energy in the Hippodrome was infectious and I felt so proud to see so many other people as excited as I was. I had convinced some friends who didn't know of them to come along and even they enjoyed it. Tokyo Police Club were getting the New Slang experience and it was incredible. This time I didn't bother trying to contain my joy as I sang along to every song and chanted 'we want more' along with everyone else once they walked off stage. I took more photographs and some video footage but nothing I look at now compares to the memory in my head and the way it still makes me feel. Once they had officially ended their set and the lights on and around the stage were dimmed, I snuck under the barriers and knicked the set list. It's tapped to my wall, along with my ticket stub from the instore and a signed Tokyo Police Club at New Slang poster. Every time I look at them, I still feel a flicker of that excitement. I waited around the stage in the hope of catching a glimpse of them. My friends were talking to me but I was distracted with my eyes fixed on the entrance to the backstage area when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed movement on the stage. Josh, Greg and Graham were packing up their equippement. I seized the opportunity and ran to the barriers and called them out, by name. In retrospect, if I was them I would have probably feared from my safety. But Josh didn't skip a beat; he came down straight away and so did Greg and Graham. I thanked them for coming and asked if I could get a picture with them, to which they graciously said of course I could. I don't know how it happened but the next thing I knew, I was talking to Josh about his musical influences. He likes well produced music and even joked about how he kind of likes Kesha's songs. It was a normal conversation about music and how he learned to play the guitar on his own. I was blown away by how humble and polite they were. Greg and I also talked about their New Slang experience. He said they would love to come back in the spring (hint, hint!), that they loved the energy and playing intimate gigs like NS. True to their word, they stopped packing up and came out on the other side for photographs. Josh called their sound guy to take the picture and they even went off to try and find Dave, who had disappeared, so that I could get a picture with all of them. They didn't find him but by that time I was so overwhelmed by everything so far that I didn't mind. I talked some more with Greg and then wished them luck with whatever was to come for them next, as they were to fly out to Jakarta the next day. I think I know what floating on air feels like, because that night I felt I was drifting around in a daze. As I danced to Two Door Cinema Club I noticed Dave talking to some fans and ran over. And so I have a picture with him as well. The night was awesome. I never imagined something like this would be possible for me. I lived on a tiny island were no one even knows what good music is, let alone indie and so, when I moved to Kingston for uni I never expected something like Banquet could exist. I never dreamed what you guys do could be possible. I've been to some incredible gigs within the last two years. I've seen some on my absolute favourites including The Futureheads, Friendly Fires and The Wombats. I've been to so many New Slang nights and will never tire of it I've seen that you guys are committed to the music and 2010 has been an epic year. You probably get this a lot, but I don't think you guys can fully understand how grateful I am for the experiences you've offered me. I have six more months at university and the first thing I think of when I contemplate the future is that I don't want to miss out on New Slang. And so I've decided to continue living in Kingston and that's mainly because of the music scene you guys have worked so hard to create. So yeah, November the eleventh was my favourite New Slang/Banquet memory. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Thanks guys and Merry Christmas.
