Trick Of Light
Expected 2nd May It only takes a few bars of Keep The Fire, the first single to be released from the album, to tell you that you are in the presence of Big Music. This west London five-piece are not in the business of half measures, not interested in anxious, apologetic, half-baked landfill indie. Goldhawks make their ambitions clear from the start. Two years ago, under his own name Bobby was releasing a single, Deja Vu, whose sweeping strings and acoustic shuffle saw him quickly bracketed alongside the likes of Laura Marling, Jamie T and Mumford and Sons on the dawning London skewed-folk scene. Already, people whose curiosity had been aroused by Deja Vu’s gentle acoustica found themselves faced with a very different prospect live. “The songs were getting much heavier,” Bobby remembers. “On the one hand, I was drawing on a passion for Ryan Adams. But then I’d find myself being inspired by filmic and more textured music. And it was obvious to everyone that this big, majestic sound wasn’t just down to me.” Listen to tracks like Where In the World and Running Away and it isn’t difficult to see why people emerge from the band’s shows in a state a euphoria. More like revivalist meetings than gigs, Goldhawks’ live performances have reminded older hands of the zealotry and ferment of Echo & The Bunnymen. To their own generation, Goldhawks represent something that can often seem like it’s in very short supply indeed: music that has nothing to do with striking attitudes or ticking commercial boxes, and everything to do with what Bobby calls his only reason for making music in the first place: because he has to, he’s “got no choice”. www.goldhawks.co.uk

The fourth full length album from the awesome Kingston visitors Circa Waves, offering up another dose of their dynamic and anthemic indie-rock driven tunes, following on from 2019's What's It Like Over There?
An album of our times, ‘Sad Happy’ is formed of two diametrically distinctive sides – the first half of the record contains the Happy tracks, the latter the Sad tracks.
Lead single ‘Jacqueline’ is unveiled today as the first taste of ‘Sad Happy’. Listen here. An infectious, Soweto flavoured groove, ‘Jacqueline’ is another bold slice of bright, life-affirming pop from the pen of Kieran Shudall, who is establishing himself as one of Britain’s most prolific young songwriters. With it’s infectious chorus and refrain of ‘Good times are coming around the bend’, Jacqueline is at once instantly recognisable and also another bold sonic leap forward for Circa Waves. It’s a song that’ll sit effortlessly amongst a setlist already brimming with anthems.
‘Sad Happy’ was written and produced in full by Kieran Shudall, and mixed by Grammy winners Dan Grech-Marguerat and Matt Wiggins. Today’s album announcement comes a little over six months after the release of April’s Top Ten Charting UK Album ‘What’s It Like Over There’. The prolific nature of Kierans’ writing, coupled with Circa Waves relentless appetite for playing live and their own label imprint, are cementing the Liverpool four piece’s reputation as one of the UK’s most dynamic and exciting bands.

The seventh full length album from the acclaimed and infectious alternative rockers Maximo Park, following on from 2017's Risk To Exist.
The album arrives as something of an examination, zeroing in on the notion of the self, identity as a band, and that of humanity as a whole. The album’s title nods to the famous Nature vs Nurture debate. Discussing whether change is capable under the influence of time, perspective, environment or if we are destined to be bound by our own genetics, it asks, “who are we, and who do we want to be, and do we have any control over it?”.
“I'm so happy we were able to make this album during lockdown, as it's been a challenging time for everyone. After almost 4 years since Risk To Exist, we wanted to explore new musical territory (for us) without sacrificing our trademark melodic twists and heartfelt lyrics. As always, the passing of time looms large, although the songs contain more affection for the past than before, and there are occasional hints of the fractious, divided time that we live in” – frontman Paul Smith
