Fourth album from Foals, one of our all-time favourite bands. They're a band very much in a league of their own with a sound quite unique to them. 2013's Holy Fire was a big album from them and What Went Down is surely set to be at the top of albums of the year lists! the record touches upon the dark depths of madness whilst also exhibiting some of the most beautiful pop songs the band have ever written. Lyrically, Philippakis deals with themes around cultural identity, generational anxiety, cynicism and pessimism; "I wanted to tap into my inner madman and feel like I was channeling some sort of fevered creature". Famously provocative, Philippakis is in equal parts destructive, obsessive, intelligent, ambitious, quick-witted with a razor sharp tongue. Transgressive CD | LP

"Foals will either restore or justify your belief in the unique magic of guitar-based music and the band as a creative unit" - Jane The second album of 2019 from the awesome FOALS, following from Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1 which was released in March. From what we know, this second offering is going to be a lot bolder and heavier in comparison to the infectious and dancey vibe of Part 1, whilst still retaining the cinematic and apocalyptic concepts. We can't wait. “Part two is a heavier listen, the guitars are more emphasised and there’s some big riffs on it,” explained Philippakis in an interview with NME. “It’s a rock record and it definitely carries on the narrative from part one. Part one ended with a lot of fire and destructive imagery, part two is trying to respond to that: how you can continue in the wreckage and through the scorched earth? We’re just excited for people to hear it because it completes the journey of what we’ve made over the last year-and-a-half.” CD | LP

They're a really great band from Birmingham who have developed a great indie-rock sound that they can call their own mixing parts of Foals, The Maccabees, Mystery Jets, some old brit-pop and more funky dancey-rock. They played New Slang a couple of years back and we're excited to have them back soon! CD

Cymbals The Age Of Fracture New album from London's Cymbals. Ace dancey indie, with a synth-pop and shogazey feel!The album was completed following a final mix from Daniel Rejmer (Foals, Everything Everything) and the result is testament to the band’s attention to detail: a cleaner, brighter sound than their brattier early recordings, edging towards the European sophistication of the end-of-the-century French house Jack grew up around. Singles 'Like An Animal', 'The End' and 'The Natural World' are characterized by an upbeat disco cool and all push the 7-minute mark, whereas ‘Winter 98’, ‘This City’, and ‘Call Me’ are brooding, stark synth-led numbers reminiscent of early-New Order, with some lyrics sung in Jack’s native French. The literary inspiration runs further through the album. The track ‘The 5%’, more obviously making reference to the themes of the album's namesake, declares “Time can be erased, you’re stupid if you try and stay in place,” over a pulsing bassline and swirling electronics. ‘Like an Animal’ is inspired by the intellectual and moral confusion of the main character in Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain. We Have Band Ternion Second album from the indie/dancey We Have Band, who tore up New Slang in December! A stylistic leap forward from their debut. The limited edition 2CD version includes 'Ternion Aside' - a 26 minute Tom We Have Band album rework. Moving forward meant a radical change in how the band approached writing the new album. From the music through to the lyrics they wanted to create something ‘timeless’, and so they began to look inward, mining the experiences that they had shared as their career had taken off. The result is a very different record, an intensely personal album that manages to be both uplifting and melancholic. Gone are the nonsense lyrics replaced by frank and honest accounts of their relationships, struggles to make sense of the world around them and the effect, both physical and emotional, of a life on the road. Musically too, ‘Ternion’ reveals a very different band to the one who first burst onto the scene in 2008.
